Strengthening Worker Protection in Nigeria’s Service Sector: The Road Ahead for NUHPSW

The hospitality and personal services sector continues to be the backbone of Nigeria’s service economy, employing millions across hotels, restaurants, catering services, and related industries. As we navigate the evolving economic landscape of 2025, the National Union of Hotels and Personal Services Workers (NUHPSW) remains committed to advancing the rights and welfare of workers in this vital sector.

With the implementation of the new N70,000 national minimum wage, NUHPSW has achieved a significant milestone in improving the living standards of our members. However, this victory represents just the beginning of our ongoing struggle for fair compensation and dignified working conditions. Many hospitality workers still face challenges, including irregular working hours, inadequate safety measures, and limited access to comprehensive healthcare benefits.

The union’s focus extends beyond wage negotiations to address emerging issues in the sector. The rise of digital platforms and gig economy services has created new categories of workers who require protection and representation. NUHPSW is actively working to ensure that workers in app-based food delivery, cleaning services, and other platform-mediated work receive the same rights and protections as traditional employees.

Training and skill development remain central to our mission. As Nigeria’s economy diversifies and the hospitality sector modernises, workers need access to continuous learning opportunities to remain competitive. NUHPSW is partnering with training institutions and employers to establish certification programs that enhance career prospects while meeting industry demands.

Moving forward, the union will continue advocating for stronger enforcement of labour laws, improved workplace safety standards, and greater social protection for all service sector workers. Through collective bargaining, strategic partnerships, and member engagement, NUHPSW is building a more equitable future for Nigeria’s hospitality workforce.
